Gentlemen Prefer Blondes – 1953
If we can't empty his pockets between us, then we're not worthy of the name Woman.”

Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell bring a fun and comedic favourite to the screen. This enjoyable musical delivers the famous “Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend” and the dazzling red dress performance with “Two Little Girls From Little Rock”. You can’t help but smile at Marilyns voice and Janes wonderful sarcasm, which bring such personality to the screen.

Lorelei Lee (Monroe) and Dorothy Shaw (Russell) are two girlfriends making a glamorous trip to Paris on a first-class cruiser. Lorelei is engaged to a of course rich, handsome young man who adores her dearly, however Lorelei’s hunger for money and men troubles him. He hires private detective Malone (Elliott Reid) in order to ‘keep an eye’ on his money-grabbing finance. Yet Malone proves to be rather dishy himself, much to Dorothy’s dismay. With Dorothy falling for the detective who is spying on her best friend, and with Lorelei’s wild ambitions, the two find themselves in a spot of bother and will do anything to help each other out.

This delightful film is made for those Sunday afternoons. The sparkling numbers and the classy, smart costumes never fail to make you smile. With great dance performances that explode on screen and with comedy running high, it’s no wonder ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ was and is still to this day such a hit.

The two leading ladies are of course fabulous in a stunning, funny and friendly way. Blondie and Russell bounce extremely well off each other, their chemistry off-set definitely proves successful onset as two best friends.

Directed by Howard Hawks (Rio Bravo, The Big Sleep), he delivers a much-loved oldie to the tele, making Sunday afternoons that little more special.
